Artist Bio
Steel engraving from an 1856 daguerreotype. This would have been during Houston’s service as the first United States Senator from Texas (February 21, 1846 -March 3, 1859), immediately preceding his service as Governor of Texas on the eve of the Civil War.
W.J. Edwards was one of the very best and most sought-after engravers of the time. He was a highly skilled artist and his beautifully detailed engravings remain as popular today as they were 150 years ago. This is a fine example of his best work - a special piece of historical importance.
