Artist Bio

James Robinson, a native of the Lone Star State, is one of the most talented painters of Texas and the West and all they represent – unspoiled beauty, rugged bluffs, beautiful creeks and streams, expanses of rarely-traveled terrain, cowboys, on the range, pastoral Hill Country scenes – to name a few. These subjects dominate Robinson's art because they are a part of his being. Some of the artist’s ancestors were early pioneers who crossed the plains in the mid 1800s and settled the land which Robinson loves to paint. An intimate knowledge of Texas and the many facets of the Western landscape are obvious when one views an image created by the artist.

Robinson always knew he would be an artist. He was committed to his education in both commercial and fine art, eventually becoming very successful as a free-lance, commercial artist, all the while honing his painting skills. The artist’s father, who was very proud of his son's art, was the first to contact a major gallery for selling Robinson’s paintings. The gallery owner was very impressed with the young painter’s work, which was a turning point in Robinson’s life. From that point on, he dedicated his life to fine art and has enjoyed a most remarkable career.

Vivid color, strong values, and dramatic composition are hallmarks of Robinson's beautiful art. The artist has always admired such masters as Frank Tenney Johnson, James Reynolds, and John Singer Sargent, and he seeks to evoke the same qualities in his paintings, while establishing his own niche in western art. The artist's paintings are known for a combination of light, color, and action that guarantees a truly magical experience with a dramatic and lasting impact on the viewer.

James has recently been honored with the "Artist’s Choice Award" in 2010 and "Best Group of Paintings" in 2007 from the Briscoe Museum's Night of Artist's show in San Antonio, Texas. Another recent honor was the "Olaf Wieghorst Award" for the best painting at the Mountain Oyster Show in Tucson, Arizona in 2007. James was also a featured artist in an article entitled "Off the Beaten Path" in the 2008 July/August edition of Art of the West Magazine. His work can be found in the collections of well known political figures, movie stars, professional baseball players and professional golfers. James and his wife, Billie, reside in Austin, Texas.
