Artist Bio

Gene Speck, born in South Dakota, raised in California, and now a resident of Nevada, is a self-taught painter in photo-real style of mountain landscapes, and nostalgic 'days-gone by' Great Plains scenes with Indian encampments, ranches and panoramic views.

Of him, it is written: "Gene Speck is a gentle simple man. He paints the land he knows and understands. He portrays the people he admires and feels close to... who lived 100 years ago. Through his paintings he brings the past to the present and harkens back to a time of peacefulness that flows out of love for the land and harmony among the people." (classic) Many of his mountain landscapes are of the Rocky and Teton ranges.

He did not begin painting until age 35, and first sold his works in California through street art shows and local contacts. In 1976, he moved to Nevada and lived on a ranch near Dayton for ten years, and from 1887 to 1992, lived at Mount Rose, and also in 1989 opened a gallery in Reno.
