Although he grew up in Southern California against the backdrop of the surfing culture, John Coleman was always more interested in art, history, and mythology. His favorite times were spent with charcoal, paint, and a good Western movie.
After a 20 year career in real estate and contracting in Prescott, Arizona, in 1992, John -at age 42- embarked upon a new career as an artist. Mentored by CA Ray Swanson, John's great talent and skill as a sculptor soon evidenced itself and his career as an artist took off like a rocket.
Now twenty years into his career as an artist, John Coleman is universally recognized as one of the preeminent sculptors of our time. He has received so many awards, gold medals and "best of show" honors that it is hard to keep count. He is a member of the Cowboy Artists of America and a Fellow in the American Sculpture Society. His work has been the subject of several major museum retrospectives, and he is an invited member of the Autry Museum Masters of the American West, The Prix de West (National Cowboy Hall of Fame & Museum), and other major museum shows. John's art has earned the respect of his peers, critics and collectors world-wide. John Coleman is certainly a great artist, but he is something more - he is a man who is respected by all who know him as gentleman of great integrity and character.
One cannot experience a John Coleman creation without realizing that the Spirit of America runs deep in this man and his art.
