A native of McKinney, Texas, he became a full time professional sculptor in the mid 1990s. In his youth, he became a boxer, winning a Golden Gloves championship. He earned a degree in finance from Brigham Young University and then worked in insurance and the oil and gas industry. He developed an interest in sculpture and took lessons from his uncle, Grant Speed. He also took workshops from Fritz White. In 1991, he began marketing his own western figure and genre pieces through galleries. In 1997, he moved to Murray, Utah to be near his daughter who is learning to be a sculptor.
